UK chatbot or voice agent with EU users? Article 50 AI disclosure since 2 August 2026
Short answer: Since 2 Aug 2026, providers must design chatbots and voice agents so people are told they are interacting with AI, clearly and at the first interaction, unless it is obvious. UK firms are covered when the system is offered in the EU or its output is used there.
Checklist per bot
- Disclosure in the first message or greeting, not only in the terms
- In the user's language
- Accessible (screen readers, voice: said out loud)
- Human route stated
- Screenshot and date saved as evidence
Copy-ready first lines
EN: Hi! I'm an AI assistant for [Business]. Type 'human' to reach a person. FR: Bonjour ! Je suis un assistant IA de [Entreprise]. DE: Hallo! Ich bin ein KI-Assistent von [Unternehmen]. ES: ¡Hola! Soy un asistente de IA de [Empresa].
UK side
UK law has no Article 50 equivalent, but the UK's five AI principles (incl. appropriate transparency) guide regulators such as the ICO, and UK GDPR transparency duties apply to the personal data your bot collects.
Next step: record your AI systems in the EURO AI Register free edition. It runs in your browser, with no account and no upload. Paid plan from $19/month if you need more.
