How to cancel GST registration online (Form GST REG-16): steps and mistakes
Why people cancel
Buyers often say they took a GST number, never used it, then faced “7000 ka penalty” on piled-up nil returns. Cancellation stops future return liability. It is not an amnesty for past periods.
Before you open REG-16
- Log in at gst.gov.in and list every return period not filed (GSTR-1 / IFF and GSTR-3B, or CMP-08 if composition).
- File the oldest pending returns first; pay late fee and interest shown.
- Clear any outstanding tax in the electronic liability ledger.
- Download your registration certificate and past acknowledgments for your records.
- Note the reason for cancellation (closure, turnover below threshold, change in constitution, etc.) as the form asks.
What REG-16 is
REG-16 is the taxpayer's application to cancel registration. After you submit, the tax officer may seek clarification; once approved, you receive an order and the GSTIN is cancelled from the effective date in that order. Stock and capital-goods implications can apply when you exit — ask your CA before you click submit if you still hold stock.
Common mistakes
- Stopping nil returns without applying. Until cancellation is approved, every period still needs a return.
- Applying with returns pending. Clear filings and dues first so the application is not rejected or kept pending.
- Assuming cancellation deletes old late fees. Past fees remain payable.
- Wrong effective date or reason. Match the form to when you actually stopped supplies.
- Ignoring input-tax-credit and stock. Cancellation can trigger tax on certain stock; get numbers checked.
