EPFO ECR: monthly due date (15th) and what late remittance costs
Why the 15th matters
EPF is deducted from wages and matched by the employer. The Scheme sets a short remittance window so members' accounts are credited on time. Courts and EPFO appellate orders repeatedly treat para 38 as requiring remittance within 15 days of month-end once wages are earned.
Where to file in 2026
- Open the EPFO Unified Portal – Employer.
- Prepare the ECR for the wage month (member-wise wages and contributions).
- Upload / generate the challan and pay through the portal's payment options before the due date.
- Save the payment proof and ECR acknowledgement.
EPFO also posts service notices on epfindia.gov.in (for example temporary passbook or claim disruptions) — check the home page if something looks stuck.
Late remittance
- Damages (s.14B) may be assessed for belated remittance.
- Interest can apply for the delay period under the Act/Scheme.
- Uploading the ECR without paying still leaves you exposed once the due date passes — pay within the due date (or any notified extension).
Common mistakes
- Waiting for salary disbursement. Liability is linked to wages earned, not only to when you actually pay staff.
- Skipping a quiet month when you still have members on the rolls.
- Wrong UAN / wage mapping that forces revisions later.
- Ignoring portal notices about ECR ledger posting delays.
Checklist
- Wage month closed in payroll
- ECR prepared on the Unified Portal
- Payment completed by the 15th of the following month
- Acknowledgement and challan archived
- Calendar reminder for the next 15th
Frequently asked questions
What is the EPFO ECR due date each month?
Contributions under the EPF Scheme are to be remitted within 15 days of the close of the month (para 38), so the practical due date employers work to is the 15th of the following month, unless EPFO notifies an extension.
Where do employers file ECR?
On the EPFO Unified Portal for employers: https://unifiedportal-emp.epfindia.gov.in/epfo/
What happens if ECR payment is late?
EPFO may levy damages under section 14B of the EPF & MP Act, 1952 and interest for the delay. Check the latest rates and any notice on epfindia.gov.in.
Is ECR the same as the old paper return?
ECR is the electronic challan-cum-return that replaced the older paper return process for remitting monthly contributions online.
