GST ASMT-10 scrutiny notice: what it is and the first steps before you reply

Last updated 14 Oct 2026 · India

Short answer. Form GST ASMT-10 is a notice issued when a proper officer scrutinises your returns and finds something that needs explanation (mismatches, anomalies or risk flags). It is not by itself a demand order — it asks you to respond with an explanation and documents by the date in the notice. Start on the GST portal under the assessment / user services area described in the assessment user guide, and involve your CA the same day you receive it.

What ASMT-10 is (and is not)

Buyers often panic because the portal message looks like an instant penalty. The first job is to read the issues listed and match them to GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, books and e-invoice data.

First steps (day 0–2)

  1. Download the notice PDF and note the due date for reply and the GSTIN / period mentioned.
  2. Forward it to your CA with GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-2B and the sales/purchase register for that period.
  3. List each discrepancy the officer raised (for example table mismatch, ITC vs GSTR-2B, turnover gap).
  4. Do not ignore it — non-reply can escalate to further assessment action.
  5. Reply on the portal in the form the notice requires (often ASMT-11 for the taxpayer's reply — confirm the exact form name shown in your notice and the assessment guide), attaching workings.
