“Telugu font ela type cheyyali?” How to type Telugu on Android and iPhone, free
Why it feels hard
Most "Telugu font" problems are really keyboard problems. Modern phones already include Telugu fonts; what you need is a keyboard that produces Telugu letters. Downloading a "font" into an app only changes how text looks in that app, which is why people write “fonts download kaavatle” or “Mobile phone lo radu anna”.
Android (Gboard)
- Open any app you type in (WhatsApp, Gmail, Keep) and tap the text box.
- At the top left of the keyboard, tap Open features menu, then More → Settings → Languages (wording can differ slightly by phone).
- Add Telugu and pick a layout: Telugu, Transliteration (type in English letters), Telugu, Telugu (Telugu script keys) or Telugu, Latin.
- Tap Done. Switch between English and Telugu with the globe key.
iPhone
- Open Settings → General → Keyboard.
- Tap Keyboards → Add New Keyboard and choose Telugu.
- In any app, tap the globe key to switch to Telugu.
Tips for invitations and posts
- Transliteration is fastest for most people who think in Telugu but learned to type in English. Check the suggestion bar for the right spelling.
- Copy-paste works everywhere. Type the Telugu text on your phone, then paste it into Canva, a video editor or a message.
- Proofread names and dates on an invitation. A wrong year is the first thing relatives notice (“Year mistake padindha?”).
- Ask AI in Telugu. Chat assistants accept Telugu typed this way, so you can ask for a draft directly in Telugu.
Common problems
- Boxes instead of letters usually mean the app or design tool you pasted into does not support Telugu. Try another font inside that app that supports Telugu script.
- Telugu not in the list on Android: update Gboard from the Play Store.
- Wrong conjunct letters in transliteration: type the word a little differently or pick from the suggestions.
Checklist
- Telugu added in Gboard or iPhone keyboard settings
- Layout chosen (transliteration or Telugu script)
- Globe key switching tested in WhatsApp
- Invitation text proofread for names, dates and year
