QRMP or monthly for October–December 2026? A one-row-per-client sheet for CA firms to settle every GSTIN before the window shuts on Saturday 31 October

Updated 21 Oct 2026 · Disclosure: the white-label calendar linked below is an Unadhi product (₹999/year).

Short answer (checked 21 Oct 2026): the choice between quarterly returns under QRMP and monthly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B for the October–December 2026 quarter can be made or changed only from 1 August to 31 October (GST portal QRMP FAQ). That is Saturday 31 October 2026, so aim for Friday 30 October. Three things make this a CA-firm problem: a GST practitioner cannot switch for the client (the client must do it from their own login), the switch is refused if the client's last due GSTR-3B is unfiled or GSTR-1 data is already saved for the quarter, and if nobody does anything the current option carries on for the whole quarter. Eligibility is aggregate turnover (PAN level) up to ₹5 crore in the current and preceding financial year. This is a starting point, not tax advice. Check the GST portal before you tell a client a date.

What you get from this guide: a finished QRMP option sheet for your firm: one row per client GSTIN with the current option, turnover test, the two blockers, a suggested option and the action, all by Google Sheets formula, so a filter shows exactly which clients must log in before 31 October. It comes with the dates each path leads to for October–December 2026, the blockers explained, and three client messages. Nothing here needs software.

The rules you need for this decision

PointWhat the GST portal says
Window for Oct–Dec quarter1 August to 31 October. Next window (January–March 2027): 1 November 2026 to 31 January 2027.
WhereServices > Returns > Opt-in for Quarterly Return (the same option is used to opt out).
Who can do itThe taxpayer. A GST practitioner can only view the details.
EligibleAggregate annual turnover (PAN based) up to ₹5 crore in the current FY and the preceding FY; normal taxpayers, SEZ units/developers, those who opted out of composition. Goes away if turnover crosses ₹5 crore.
Blocker 1The last GSTR-3B whose due date is over must be filed. On 30–31 October 2026 that is September 2026 (monthly filers, due 20 October) or July–September 2026 (quarterly filers, due 22 or 24 October).
Blocker 2You cannot opt in for a quarter if any GSTR-1 data is saved for that quarter. Delete the saved records (RESET) first.
Carries onOnce chosen, the option continues for later quarters; no yearly renewal, no reminder. One quarter can be changed at a time.
Multiple GSTINs on one PANEach GSTIN can have its own option. Eligibility is still tested on PAN-level turnover.
IFF (quarterly filers)Optional; B2B invoices and notes for months 1 and 2, by the 13th of the next month, so buyers get credit monthly. The portal refuses an IFF whose value is above the limit (shown on the portal as ₹50 lakh); move the rest to the next period.
Monthly payment (quarterly filers)PMT-06 by the 25th for months 1 and 2: fixed sum ("35% challan") or self-assessment.

November 2026GSTR-1 by Fri 11 Dec · GSTR-3B by Sun 20 DecIFF (optional) by Sun 13 Dec · PMT-06 by Fri 25 Dec
December 2026 / the quarterGSTR-1 by Mon 11 Jan 2027 · GSTR-3B by Wed 20 Jan 2027GSTR-1 for the quarter by Wed 13 Jan 2027 · GSTR-3B for the quarter by Fri 22 or Sun 24 Jan 2027 (by state group)

Weekend dates: do not plan on a date moving. Aim for the working day before.

One extra reason to check this year: the last date to take FY 2025-26 input tax credit is 30 November 2026 (CGST Act s.16(4), earlier if the annual return is filed first). A monthly filer's October GSTR-3B (due 20 November) can carry missed FY 2025-26 credit. A quarterly filer's next GSTR-3B after July–September comes only in January 2027. If a QRMP client still has FY 2025-26 credit to claim, look at it now, while filing the July–September return this week; check the official source and the client's own position before you advise.

Filter column M for anything other than "No change": that is your chase list. Add conditional formatting so M is red while N is empty. Column L is a rule of thumb, not advice: the firm decides column J client by client. A client that crosses ₹5 crore during the year leaves QRMP anyway; keep column E up to date.

Three client messages

1. Client should move to quarterly: "From October 2026 you can file GST returns once a quarter and pay tax monthly by challan. Only you can choose this, from your own GST login: Services > Returns > Opt-in for Quarterly Return, select quarterly for October–December 2026. Please do it by Friday 30 October and send us a screenshot of the confirmation. The option closes on 31 October."

2. Client should go back to monthly: "Your buyers want GST credit every month and your monthly B2B sales are above what the quarterly invoice facility takes. Please log in to the GST portal, go to Services > Returns > Opt-in for Quarterly Return and select monthly for October–December 2026, by Friday 30 October, and send us the screenshot. Your October GSTR-1 will then be due on 11 November."

3. No change: "No action needed: you stay on [monthly / quarterly] filing for October–December 2026. Your next GST dates are [dates]."
